NEW YORK (CBS) The shows in contention for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards span settings from high school to a hospital to a television studio, but all have something in common – bringing smart humor and big laughs to their audiences.

«Curb Your Enthusiasm» (HBO). The creator of «Seinfeld» plays a fictional version of himself, a semi-retired writer, producer, and actor living and working in Los Angeles.

«Glee» (FOX). A group of high school misfits band together to form a glee club, singing contemporary tunes as they strive to win show choir competitions and battle their school’s diabolical cheerleading coach.

«Modern Family» (ABC). A «mockumentary» focusing on an extended family that includes a homemaker and her hapless husband, a gay couple with a newly adopted baby and a man remarried to a much-younger Colombian woman with a pre-teen son.

«Nurse Jackie» (Showtime). The struggles of an emergency room nurse at a New York hospital with an addiction to prescription medications.

«The Office» (NBC). A look at a group of employees at a paper company in Scranton, Pa., headed by an often inappropriate manager who wants his employees to think of him as a friend first, and a boss second.

«30 Rock» (NBC). The people who work behind the scenes at a sketch comedy show, from the quirky head writer to the pompous network executive to the show’s uncontrollable stars.
